It with sadness that we say farewell to our wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. It is with joy and thanks that we celebrate her life and the legacy she leaves behind. Mom was born at home on the Le Grand family farm in the Butte St. Pierre area near Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan, the 7th of 8 children. She leaves to mourn her passing and to remember her life, her husband of 71 years Laurent (Lawrence), her sons Ron (Donna), Maurice (Madeline), Bernie (Jackie), Paul (Brenda), and daughter Mona; grandchildren Charlene, Dana, Luane, Annique, David, Carey, Derek and Scott and 17 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Liliane Le Grand, Therese St. Amand, and Simone Cayer; brothers-in-law Lou and Simeon Etcheverry, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Jean Le Grand and Corentine Marie Le Grand (Mevel); brothers and sisters Marie, Jean, Pierre, Denise, Albert, Joseph and Andre, an infant daughter Colette, and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law.

Brought up on the family farm by French immigrant parents, Genevieve learned to work hard and take joy in the simple things in life. By the age of 8 she was riding horse back to catechism and by 10 driving a horse and buggy on 2.5 hour round trip to pick up her older sister from the one room school where she taught. Genevieve attended the convent in North Battleford for one year of school and complete grade 11 by correspondence. Although that was the end of her formal education, Genevieve had a fierce intellect, a sharp wit, was an avid reader, always had a thirst for knowledge, and took great interest in world events – reading a newspaper and watching the news daily until her final year.

After marrying Lawrence in 1945, they lived on the Etcheverry family farm briefly, then North Battleford until moving to St. Walburg in 1952, where Lawrence ran his own business. Genevieve stayed home to raise her family for many years. She was a sewing wiz, even making all four boys suits, she loved tending her flowers and had a huge vegetable garden. In 1970 she became the first librarian for the Town of St. Walburg and worked there for the next 25 years, giving her an opportunity to share her deep love of reading.

Family was always of utmost importance to Genevieve. We all knew that no matter what, she would be there for whomever needed her—no questions asked. She was the family matriarch—our strong foundation and go to person. Her impact on our lives was significant and profound. So many of our memories revolve around family gatherings with amazing food and baking, for which Genevieve was legend in the family, extended family and beyond. Christmas will never be the same without her meat pies, jamjams and chocolate rolls. She loved getting together with family and friends to play cards, and board games or just to visit and enjoy a glass of wine. She especially loved dancing and community events.

Genevieve believed strongly in giving back and contributing to her community. She was the founding president of the St. Walburg CWL and just marked her 60th year. She was member of the Royal Purple, holding a variety of executive positions including Honoured Royal Lady. She also helped organize the annual Donor’s Choice charity appeal and volunteered countless hours at the curling rink, skating club, hockey games. She was also a member of the St. Walburg Legion and integral member of the committee that produced the St. Walburg history books.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Genevieve’s nephew Roger Schmitz for his kindness, compassion, devotion and support in her final days. To everyone at Samaritan Place, whether or not there are angels in heaven, we know there are many living and working among us here on earth. Donations in Genevieve’s memory may be made to Samaritan Place (375 Cornish Road, Saskatoon, SK S7T 0P3). Mom / grandma you will live on in all our memories.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016 at 7:30 pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th St., first right past Briargate Rd). A Mass of Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Philip Neri Church (1902 Munroe Avenue S, Saskatoon).

Arrangements entrusted to Patrick Brown.
