It is with great sadness that I announce the end of a beautiful journey with my precious husband, Mel Jurgens.
Mel passed away at home suddenly and without warning, we are grateful he didn’t suffer and that we were by his side. Still, it was far too soon.
Mel’s greatest joy in life was his family. He so enjoyed our many years of cottage life together at Wakaw Lake. He loved tending his immaculate yard and garden. He also loved traveling the world, and we enjoyed our numerous trips together very much. He particularly looked forward to our winters in Mexico; this winter would have been our twelfth.
Mel always had a video camera with him and his travel videos are legendary. He took great pride in editing them into wonderful travelogues, and we’ll treasure them forever. He particularly loved taking video of our kids and grandkids. We all now wish that he was on the other side of that camera a little more often.
His gentleness, patience and good humour were the qualities others noticed in him. He loved to laugh and to make others laugh; he was a genuinely kind and caring man.
Mel was very involved with his church and the Knights of Columbus, and he dedicated himself to service. He loved Johnny Cash, western movies, great dinners with family and friends, playing cribbage, and making fabulous wine.
Mel was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and was predeceased by his parents, William and Cornelia Jurgens, his parents-in-law Jim and Agnes Casey, his sister Luella Litz, brother-in-law Jim Litz, and brother-in-law Edwin Casey.
Mel leaves behind a loving and devoted family: his loving wife of 53 years, Cecelia (Casey), and his children, Doug (Janis) Jurgens (grandson Nigel, granddaughters Jade and Natasha), Donna Jurgens, Deb Jurgens (grandsons Devin and Lucas) extended family, many nieces and nephews and numerous close and very dear friends.
He was so very proud of his family and the wonderful people they became, and we, of him. Mel was truly loved; he spoiled us rotten; we are lost without him.

Prayers will be held on Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 PM, and a Celebration of Mel’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 28 at 2:00 PM officiated by Fr. David Tumback, at St. Anne's Catholic Church (217 Lenore Dr. Saskatoon, SK). Arrangements are entrusted to Hillcrest Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home (306-477-4400). For friends so wishing, memorial donations in memory of Mel may be directed to Hope for Malawi Foundation Inc. (38 St. Lawrence Cres. Saskatoon, SK. S7K 1G5 or at hopeformalawi.com).
