The Family of Frances Ewart is saddened to announce her passing in the early hours of November 28 after a very brief illness. Fran was born on the family farmstead east of Pelly, Saskatchewan where she was the youngest of 13 children. She was educated at the Racing Lake School where she completed her Grade 8. She finished her grade 12 at Pelly High School and upon graduation she attended nursing school in Moose Jaw earning a diploma in psychiatric nursing. It was during this time she met and fell in love with Keith Ewart whom she eventually married on December 28th, 1957. Fran and Keith enjoyed 53 years of marriage until his passing in April of 2011.

Following their graduation the couple settled in Moose Jaw where they pursued their nursing careers. Fran was employed at the Saskatchewan Training School (later known as Valley View Centre) and managed first the Activity Centre and then Diversified Services. These facilities both offered training and employment opportunities to people with mental and physical challenges. When the couple relocated to Saskatoon in 1989, Fran worked at Parkridge Centre and Extendicare until her retirement. Their retirement years were spent with their children and grandchildren, and they enjoyed travelling to numerous destinations with many of their friends. She traveled willingly and enthusiastically with Keith to remote Saskatchewan locations to scout out his varied interests in elevators, hydrants, fire trucks, and train stations. Fran enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid birdwatcher, hiker and camper; she also loved spending hours in her garden with her flourishing perennials. The homes in which Fran and Keith lived always had the best garden spaces and their outdoor areas provided great enjoyment for their family and friends.

Frances was an avid reader on a wide variety of subjects, and the crossword puzzle was a part of her daily life. She also had a wide range and eclectic taste in music. She was a lover of animals, but cats had a special place in her heart. Her own cats, someone else’s cats, the strays that wandered through her yard: all found a home with Fran.

She was a fiercely independent woman who never complained about anything life dealt her. Fran always put 100% into her relationships with people, which was the key focus of her life. She was able to maintain her independence in her home until the end of her life, despite her health challenges. Fran was steadfastly firm in her beliefs and according to her sons, loved to offer people a piece of her mind.

Fran is lovingly remembered by her sons Douglas (Catriona), Kevin (Pam), Cam (Nancy); and 5 grandchildren: Jon, Mike, Joel, Jordan, and Kirsten. She is also remembered by her two sisters Ann Kondratoff and Vera (Robert) Bryant as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of Fran’s life will take place on Monday, December 3 at 2:00 pm at Hillcrest Funeral Home in Saskatoon (east on 8th Street, first right past Briargate Road). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Pulmonary Rehab Program at the Saskatoon Field House (2020 College Dr., Saskatoon S7N 2W3) or the Saskatoon SPCA (5028 Clarence Ave. S, Saskatoon S7T 1A7) would be gratefully accepted. Online condolences may be sent from www.hillcrestmemorial.ca Arrangements entrusted to Megan Kasper.

Fran gave everything of herself and asked nothing in return. Your family loves you. Thank you for a life well lived.
