Agnes Ziehl passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon on November 12, 2013 following a long battle with cancer. Agnes was born on January 23, 1944 at Lanigan, Saskatchewan. She was the second child and the only daughter of Herman and Olga Koschinsky of Leroy. Her early years were spent on the family farm in the Illinois School District located between Leroy and Jansen.
Agnes was predeceased by her parents and by her husband Norman. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and faithful partner of 26 years, Gary Randall. She also leaves her brother Gordon, his wife Margaret, and their three children: Heather, Eric and Justina, all with their respective families. Agnes is also survived by three aunts and numerous cousins and other relatives and friends.
Agnes started her education at the one-room Illinois Public School. She took Grades 3 through 12 at Leroy, after the family moved there in 1952. From there she proceeded to Robertson Secretarial School in Saskatoon. Upon completing her training she held a number of jobs in the city, starting in a secretarial position with Cronkhite Supply Ltd. in 1965 and ending eventually in the position of Sales Coordinator at the Saskatoon Centennial Auditorium from where she retired in 1993. Between these two jobs, Agnes provided secretarial support for several months in the winter of 1970/71 in respect to construction of “Mount Blackstrap” for the 1971 Canada Winter Games. She regarded this brief interlude as a real highlight in her career.
Agnes was a perfectionist and always paid attention to details. She had a soft spot in her heart for animals of all kinds, wild or tame. When she was still in grade school she owned a pony, and she kept a cat whenever it was feasible to do so. Her favourite cat was her last one, which answered to the name, “Penny”. She liked to travel and made numerous vacation trips with Gary throughout North America and especially to the East and West Coasts, and also to Europe, including England and Ireland.
Agnes was the recipient of considerable medical care over the last months and days of her life. We express our gratitude to her oncologist, Dr. S. Yadav and his nurse Cathy at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre, to her family physician Dr. S. Goluboff, as well as to staff at RUH.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home with reception to follow. Online condolences may be sent from www.hillcrestmemorial.ca In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Agnes’s memory may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency or Saskatoon SPCA or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements entrusted to Paula Olson.
