Vern passed away peacefully in the Saskatoon St. Paul’s hospital after a battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Vern was the proud and loving father of Lara Hill and Maria Herr. He will be fondly remembered by his aunts, Florence Adams and Dorothy Herr; brothers, Ed (Paula) Herr and Roy (Betty) Herr; sister, Rita (Wilf) Peters; as well as cousins, nieces and nephews and their families who all enjoyed visiting their Uncle Vern out at the farm.

Vern held a deep appreciation for nature and a love of the land. He always wore a wild flower in his lapel to mark the seasons. Vern is one of the last bastions of traditional farming in the South Corman Park area, having followed the legacy of his departed parents, Elizabeth and Clarence Herr, and his grandparents before them. He was a hardworking dairy producer and grain farmer until retirement and remained on the homestead.

The farm is a special place where generations have convened to reap the harvest and gather year round. Vern enjoyed reflecting and telling stories about the adventures of his life and the challenges of farming, and during his senior years, the joy he felt watching his garden grow and the birds at the feeder. We will all remember his warm and welcoming disposition, a good game of crib and his ability to find the bright side to laugh and to make us laugh.

Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street; first right after Briargate Road). Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
