It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Denise Marilyn Thiessen on Tuesday, March 14th at the age of 62. She was predeceased by her father Gordon Lane. She is loved and remembered by her mother Beryl Lane, her son Joel Thiessen (Sandy), and numerous relatives and friends. Denise attended Bedford Road Collegiate and graduated in 1972. She went on to attend Saskatoon Business College for a year before taking a position with Royal Insurance in 1973. Starting out as a file clerk, typist and receptionist, Denise quickly moved into underwriting. Denise touched the insurance industry in many ways but nowhere more so than at the Saskatchewan Mutual Insurance where she worked for 32 years. Starting out with the Company as head of the personal lines department on July 12, 1982, Denise became the Company’s Underwriting Manager in 1994 and in 2005 was promoted to Vice President, Underwriting and Marketing. Denise trained, guided and mentored many staff over the years and earned the respect of many brokers, reinsurers, industry regulators and her counterparts with other insurers. She was a strong supporter of the insurance institute and encouraged all staff to pursue an insurance education to help them achieve their career objectives. Denise was also a founding member of the Saskatoon Insurance Association (1990), a networking and mentoring organization for women in the insurance industry. Although the official organization disbanded years ago, the friendships that Denise formed remained strong and continued by way of monthly dinners and an annual Christmas party that no one ever wanted to miss. Always very active in her church, and even more so in the last couple of years, Denise helped out whenever she could. She was a beloved leader at the church she grew up in and continued to serve. Denise had also dedicated her time and love over the last few years to her mother Beyrl, who she helped through some challenging health issues of her own. Denise indeed will be sadly missed, but she leaves an incredible legacy. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, March 21st, 2017 at St. Thomas Wesley United Church. Reception to follow. Interment will take place in the Garden of the Last Supper at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations in Denise’s memory may be made to St. Thomas Wesley United Church (808 20 St W, Saskatoon, SK S7M 0Y3).
